2. Kevin Kline As Inspector Dreyfus In The Pink Panther
This probably has more to do with my prejudices than anything else, because I have heard people say how this movie, had the title been different would have been passable. I do think though that if movie people are going to put a recognisable movie title on a poster then they obviously want a bit more attention. Furthermore, if said title happens to involve one of the best comic characters of the last 50 years, then it is difficult to sympathise with said movie people when comparisons are made to the original. Because if they did not want comparing, they could have changed the title. Peter Sellers' Clouseau is someone who gets through life through dumb luck and an inability to admit that he's made a mistake. Deep in his heart of hearts he knows that he's not the brightest of men, but he continues to believe that so long as he maintains his dignity, his ability will not be questioned. Steve Martin's Clouseau on the other hand has very little of Sellers' pomposity and haughtiness which makes him a much more...bland character that seems to just fall over a lot, in less amusing ways than Sellers can. Kevin Kline is fine in this but even he can't save this film. Hell if Jean Reno couldn't, what chance did he have?!
