Johnny Depp may have taken top billing, stolen all the headlines, created one of the most iconic movie characters of the 21st Century and scored his first ever Academy Award nomination for his troubles, but Captain Jack Sparrow is not Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl's leading man.

That honor falls to Orlando Bloom's Will Turner, who fills the audience surrogate role as both he and us find ourselves slowly introduced to the world of piracy and the wacky band of misfits that inhabit it. Unfortunately, the actor's one-note and stoic heroism renders him as a less than engaging presence, one that gets reduced to rubble anytime he shares the screen with Depp's tour-de-force of bizarre tics.

Captain Jack inevitably found himself the focus of the franchise, but it eventually turned out that he worked much better in significantly smaller doses, although the studio didn't really have much of a choice after the constantly-frowning Will Turner appeared to undergo a total charisma bypass and ended up as the first installment's least interesting character.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
