10 Great British Horror Films Of The Last Decade
1. Saint Maud
As if 2020 wasn’t already horrifying enough, director Rose Glass just had to go and drop her outstanding feature film debut into the mix.
Saint Maud follows the devoutly religious nurse Maud (Morfyyd Clark) after she is charged with the care of Amanda (Jennifer Ehle), a former dancer stricken by cancer. As her care for Amanda continues, Maud becomes obsessed in her fervent attempts at saving her soul, fully believing she’s on a mission from God to bring her salvation before she passes.
Saint Maud is not your typical popcorn horror film, and it’s all the better for it. It elects to take a patient exploration of Maud’s fragile mental state, and her troubled past, rather than chucking in jump scares for the sake of it.
Throughout this haunting journey, the film has you guessing as to whether there is any truth to Maud’s belief, if she is suffering from psychosis, or is there something more sinister at play. With a finale that is guaranteed to leave your jaw on the floor, Saint Maud is one of the must see films of 2020.
