10 Great British Horror Films Of The Last Decade

3. The Woman In Black

It doesn’t feel like it was eight years ago that this gem starring Daniel Radcliffe got released, but it was, and it’s still as scary as it was back then.

In fact, I don’t recall any other film with a 12A rating being as creepy as this Great British horror from James Watkins (Eden Lake). Based on the novel by Susan Hill, and adapted into plays on stages worldwide, The Woman in Black is a ninety-five minute slice of pure atmospheric terror.

In 1910, a young solicitor (Daniel Radcliffe) must travel to a small remote village in order to retrieve the documents of Alice Drablow from Eel Marsh House. Once there, he’s disturbed by unexpected noises and unwanted visions of something ghastly that resides within the house, something driven by vengeance.

What makes The Woman in Black remarkable, aside from its terrific production, is that it avoided a 15 BBFC rating by cutting a mere six seconds to achieve a 12A rating. Just imagine how many Harry Potter fans went in to the cinema excited to watch this, and came out traumatised.

Avid writer of nonsense. Can often be seen in his natural habitat watching far too many films and not enough TV. Occasionally plays on the Xbox and Megadrive whilst chastising himself for not writing more.
