10 Great Characters Ruined By Terrible Sequels

9. Pennywise - IT Chapter 2

It Chapter Two Pennywise
Bloody Disgusting

Look, there's no doubt that it's hard to make a monster progressively scarier every time they appear onscreen.

The difficulty which many long-running horror franchises have in upping the ante of their antagonists is the reason the later Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street instalments are infamous for making their villains corny parodies of their earlier selves... And that's saying nothing of (shudder) Seed of Chucky.

But the 2019 adaptation of horror author Stephen King's chilling doorstop It already had its end point in sight when the first film's director signed on to shoot the follow up, so it's hard to understand how the flick managed to fumble the baddie so badly.

But fumble poor Pennywise IT Chapter 2 most certainly did, with the film manifesting the monster as a toothy lumberjack mascot, a puking gurning zombie, and a naked old lady amongst other laughably un-scary incarnations.

Eventually, the first film's terrifying monster was reduced to a gibbering puddle and destroyed by... The power of friendship, in a twist which broke the hearts and overworked funny bones of many formerly fearful fans.
