10 Great Dark Film Comedies You Have To See

9. The Art Of Self-Defense

James McAvoy Filth
Bleecker Street

The most recent movie on the list, 2019's The Art of Self-Defense is a striking and original film about a man wanting to learn karate after being attacked by a violent motorcycle gang. In doing so, he grows tougher and excels in his classes, but begins a downward spiral into senseless violence and finds himself embroiled in a bizarre series of events.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Imogen Poots, and Alessandro Nivola, The Art of Self-Defense's biggest strength is its ability to balance weird and dark humour with shocking turns of violence and murder - moments which often come out of nowhere but constantly hit all the right notes, creating a sense of chaos as the plot unfolds.

Running more like a thriller than your standard dark comedy, the film is as much a mystery as it is a film about martial arts and trauma. Thanks to some solid performances from its three leads and a genuinely original script, The Art of Self-Defense is likely a movie that passed you by upon its release, but one you'll thankful to have watched once you've dug it back up.
