10 Great Dark Film Comedies You Have To See
5. The Voices
Coming out in 2014, The Voices is a surreal dark comedy-horror featuring Ryan Reynolds, Gemma Arterton, Anna Kendrick and lots of talking animals. Tackling themes of murder and schizophrenia, the film follows a man whose dark secrets burst out in particularly violent fashion after being stood up for a date.
Reynolds stars as Jerry, a schizophrenic who refuses to take his medication but hides his issues with an upbeat and likeable persona. His more extreme hallucinations see him conversing with his talking cat and dog, pets which start to push him to act on his more violent impulses.
After work colleague Fiona (Arterton) stands him up, Jerry ends up accidentally killing her and begins to converse with her severed head in his apartment, all the while being pressured to kill again.
Arguably the most hilariously bizarre movie on the list, The Voices found itself a divisive spectacle for most critics, but thanks to Reynolds' unwavering likability and the sheer originality of the murderous tale, the film has aged very well and for any detractors it is much better on a second viewing. But if you like your films with a big wedge of weird visuals, violent twists and dark social satire, then you need look no further than The Voices.
