10 Great Dark Film Comedies You Have To See

6. Grosse Point Blank

James McAvoy Filth
Buena Vista

Released in 1997, Grosse Point Blank sports one of John Cusack's best ever performances, and boasts a plot that is as simple as it action-packed, thrilling and actually quite moving - once you get passed the murder and assassinations, that is.

Cusack stars as Martin Blank, a renowned hitman who accepts a job in the suburb of Grosse Point, where he grew up and also where his ten-year high school reunion is set to take place. There, he reconnects with an old flame and must evade federal agents, an enemy hitman, and an assassin who wants him join an organisation for professional killers.

Also starring Minnie Driver, Dan Aykroyd, Alan Arkin, Joan Cusack, Jeremy Piven and Hank Azaria, Grosse Point Blank really works because of its narrative simplicity. It's funny and the humour almost always involves death or violence, and Cusack's performance as a hitman disillusioned about both his career and his life is hilariously cynical, making many aspects of the movie surprisingly bittersweet.

Thrilling, violent, relatable and with a brilliant ensemble cast, Grosse Point Blank is one of the most overlooked and dependably funny comedies of the '90s.
