10 Great Directors With No Movies In The IMDB Top 250

2. Kathryn Bigelow

Highest-Rated Movies: The Hurt Locker (7.6) and Detroit (7.4)

One of the few prolific female directors working today (and the only woman in history to take home a Best Director Oscar), Kathryn Bigelow has made a name for herself directing uncompromising dramas based on very real situations, a far cry from the early days of her career where she helmed fluffy action flicks like Point Break, and even a vampire movie, Near Dark.

Her earlier work was certainly more fun than her current output, but as she's matured as a filmmaker, she's found more critical, commercial and awards success, and virtually every time she releases a movie, it's safe to assume it will be a top contender at the Oscars or the Golden Globes.

Bigelow's movies are hard to watch, so they won't be for everyone - and the fact that they're not conventionally enjoyable could have contributed to her absence from the Top 250 - but it's fantastic to see a talented woman find so much success in Hollywood in spite of that.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
