10 Great Films About Addiction

9. Clean And Sober (1988)

Michael Fassbender Shame
Warner Bros.

Though it doesn't sport the most imaginative title in the world, Clean and Sober is still a great little drama lost in the admittedly awesome '80s movie scene.

The film stars Michael Keaton - in one of his earliest dramatic roles - as real estate agent and cocaine addict Daryl, who finds himself in hot water after committing fraud against his own company and deciding to hide from the law in an anonymous drug rehabilitation centre.

There, Daryl goes on a month-long journey of self-actualisation, and must confront his drug addiction and his biggest failings before his life sinks any further into moral blackness.

A smart and deeply moving movie, Clean and Sober is anchored by Keaton's sensitive and complex performance (one that, in hindsight, foreshadowed his later success as an Oscar nominee) and a realistic, troubling look at the lengths some addicts have to go to in order to combat their demons.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
