6. Crazy Heart (2009)

The film that finally won the great Jeff Bridges his long overdue Oscar, Crazy Heart follows a downtrodden, alcoholic country singer called Bad Blake, who attempts to get his faded career back on track and get clean after meeting passionate journalist Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

If that write-up sounds somewhat uninspired, what Crazy Heart lacks in originality it more than makes up for in great sequences of heart and a moving musical tone.

With powerful, uplifting performances from Bridges, Gyllenhaal and co-stars Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall, and an open and honest look at life as an alcoholic, Crazy Heart is every bit as sweet, sad, and heartwarming as it sounds.

Though Jeff Bridges really should have won his Oscar a long time before his turn as Bad Blake, it's still a worthy win, as the actor perfectly crafts a character broken by his own mistakes, avoiding of his past and reluctance about his future.

A typical rise and fall drama, Crazy Heart is still one hell of a powerful film.
