10 Great Films That Take Place In A Single Location

3. Rope

Al Pacino Dog Day Afternoon
Universal Pictures

In addition to Rear Window, Hitchcock's other one location movie is the brilliant Rope, which actually also plays out all in one continuous shot.

One of Hitchcock's darkest movies ever, the film follows two men who murder one of their classmates just for the thrill of it. They hide his body in their apartment and then host a dinner party with the body still there, essentially just to see if they can get away with it.

It's another film that really feels like a play, and the fact that it's supposedly all one long shot certainly adds to that (although it's pretty obvious where Hitchcock is hiding the cuts). The way Hitchcock builds tension in this film is absolutely genius, and it's one of his most exciting films. He once described suspense as two people having a conversation as a bomb is about to go off, and that's kind of what Rope is like: it's all just a ticking clock until the "bomb" of these guys being discovered goes off.
