10 Great Films Under 95 Minutes Long
7. The Vast Of Night (91 Mins)
An excellent science-fiction film overtly influenced by anthology tv series, The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. The Vast of Night takes place in real time over one night and chronicles the investigation of the two leads, Everett and Fay, when the former’s local radio show is interrupted by a mysterious signal.
The first 15 minutes or so of the film are a bit of a struggle, due to the constant barrage of ‘50s slang used by Everett to hammer home this was a period piece. Thankfully, they ease up on this for the remainder of the film and you’re able to enjoy the slowly unravelling mystery.
The film has a couple of creepy sections, but its no horror movie; The Vast of Night relies on its well-crafted atmosphere and solid acting to inspire wonder and awe, rather than resorting to any cheap scares when it so easily could have done given the subject material.
It’s an impressive debut film from director, Andrew Patterson. Anyone who’s enjoyed The Twilight Zone, or The Outer Limits will enjoy this loving homage.
