10 Great Films You Can't Admit You Love (And Why)
8. Serendipity
There's just something about a young John Cusack that's so damn charming. Even when he's playing a total as*hole, it's hard not to see a bit of yourself in him, and to come around to loving him in the end. That's the kind of character that Cusack excelled at early in his career, and those movies are the ones for which he'll be remembered.
His most iconic roles are in films like 1989's Say Anything... or 2000's High Fidelity, but there's another such romantic comedy that's frequently forgotten: Serendipity. Most people see Serendipity as a film which fails to strike the balance between cheesy and sentimental, between contrived and satisfying.
But come on! It's John freakin' Cusack looking like a love lost bum, wandering around New York City searching for Kate Beckinsale after a chance encounter. It's the kind of story that appeals on a deeply human level, and even though it's utterly ridiculous it wears it's big, beating heart proudly on its sleeve.
Sadly, admitting you like it will only make others think you're the kind of person who spends their free time watching soaps rather than a person who just wants to hug John Cusack.
