10 Great Genre-Hopping Prison Movies

5. Tango And Cash

Genre: Buddy action movie Take yourself back to the late 80s and you'll find yourself in an era of Hollywood action movies where fans hotly anticipated their favourite stars pairing up to do a film together. After waiting with baited breath, one such movie finally made it to the silver screen in 1989, with Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone teaming up for the action comedy Tango and Cash. Ray Tango (Stallone) and Gabriel Cash (Russell) are two detectives with unconventional methods (aren't they always?) hot on the heels of master crime lord Yves Perret (Jack Palance, who seems to enjoy slumming it). Framed for murder they find themselves in a maximum security prison, surrounded by dozens of hardened cons, most of whom they were responsible for putting away. Cue badly-written wisecracking, lots of muscle-baring fight scenes and over the top action galore as they attempt to escape and track down Perret to bring him to justice. Okay, while this list claims to be for "great" prison movies, Tango and Cash perhaps doesn't fit the bill - but it certainly falls into the "guilty pleasures" category recently covered here on What Culture, and you'd be hard pushed to find a more cheesy yet entertaining example of brainless action shenanigans. So bad it's good, if you turn your brain off at the door and Tango and Cash will have you laughing at its silliness from start to finish. See also: Escape Plan
