Genre: Horror What happens when you put everyone's favourite H. P. Lovecraft-inspired mad scientist Herbert West in prison, depriving him of access to his macabre science laboratory? It turns out that West is pretty damn good at improvising and is more than capable of carrying out his crazy experiments undeterred by shackles and bars. Beyond Re-Animator, the third in the Re-Animator series, ratchets up the blood-soaked gore to the next level, as West (Jeffrey Combs) teams up with a young doctor Howard Phillips (Jason Barry) to continue his morbid obsession with bringing the dead back to life. After experimenting on rats, he finally gathers the equipment he needs to do the job properly, and before long the prison is overrun with rioting re-animated inmates, replete with severed heads, strange mutations and a bloody slew of inventive death scenes. Brian Yuzna - who made his name with the delightfully surreal shocker Society - relishes in the carnage, and while Beyond Re-Animator retreads some of the ground laid down in the original you can't really fault his commitment to excessive schlock which favours silly shock value over subtle scares.
