10 Great Genre-Hopping Prison Movies

3. The Shawshank Redemption

Genre: Hollywood drama Few movies have gone from such a mediocre box office reception to become such an enduring cult classic as The Shawshank Redemption - barely recouping its production cost, it has since appeared on numerous "Top 100 Movies" lists and it cited by many film buffs as their favourite movie of all time. Adapted from the Stephen King short story Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption by Frank Darabont, the film stars Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne, a banker imprisoned for two life sentences for the murder of his wife and her lover. He befriends Ellis Redding (Morgan Freeman), who provides him with the rock hammer and poster of Rita Hayworth which he uses to carry out his plan to escape. A story big in scope spanning decades, The Shawshank Redemption is in a sense the quintessential prison drama, covering themes from violence and sexual assault to corrupt guards and, ultimately, redemption. With Roger Deakins as cinematographer it's not surprising that the film looks sumptuous, and with an exemplary production design to match one of the outstanding aspects of The Shawshank Redemption is the authentic feel for both the setting and the era. But it is the screenplay and performances which truly make the film as enduring as it has proven to be - Robbins and Freeman are certainly on form, with a perfectly cast line-up of supporting actors rounding off a fine ensemble piece.
