10 Great Horror Films You Probably Missed In 2015

It's not all cheap jump scares.

Bar some pretty rubbish sequels, 2015 was a pretty good year for the horror genre, with some spectacular films released. Not that you'd know it come Oscar season. It Follows harkened back to glory days of American suburban horror, with a dose of the contemporary in the form of a subtext on the dangers of promiscuity. The film also boasted an enveloping, synth-laden soundtrack and effective, sterile camerawork that created a sense of intrusive voyeurism. Any nods for cinematography or sound-editing at the Oscars though? Nah. Guillermo Del Toro€™s Crimson Peak was equally interesting, with every frame achingly crafted with attentive mise-en-scene, costume and colour to convey the mood of a beautiful canvas. And did that receive any nominations for costume design or directing? Of course it didn€™t. And if the behemoths of the genre can€™t even get a look in, how do you think some of the more independent or low-budget films fared? With that in mind, let's look at the real hidden gems of last year. Horror aficionados will no doubt be aware of some of these, but for everyone else, prepare to fall in love with some contemporary horror.
