8. Sun Choke
Sun Choke is a stylistic, slow burning psychological horror that utilises themes of mental health, nature vs nurture and body horror to create an intelligent and deeply unsettling film. Janie (Sarah Hagan) is recovering from a psychotic ordeal through a holistic regime concocted by her carer/stepmother Irma (Barbara Crampton). As it happens, that regime isnt entirely as beneficial as it could be, and Janine veers off the road to recovery as she develops an unhealthy obsession with a young woman named Savannah that creates a hostile triangle between the three women. The action meanders along with an illusory, ethereal pace that often leaves you trying to deduce exactly what is real and what is conjured as Janine's sanity slips away. The film boasts powerful performances from Hagan as an unhinged psychopath as well as Crampton as Irma, with the palpably eldritch atmosphere created by Ben Cresciman ensuring they really get under your skin.

Most of my time is occupied by reading, staring at a screen, being oppressed by the government and awaiting the return of the Great Old One Cthulhu... I also write a little too.
