10 Great Horror Movies With An Incredibly Simple Premise
9. It Follows
A sexually transmitted haunting seemed unexpectedly revolutionary upon the release of It Follows back in 2014. At a second glance though, it's an incredibly simple concept that successfully carries the story forward without any real complications or plot wrinkles.
There's a mysterious, murderous entity on the prowl. For lead protagonist Jay, she garners its potentially fatal interest when she sleeps with a man who'd been stuck with it before her. If the creature follows for long enough, the character in question goes the way of so many hapless figures in the horror genre before them.
Overall, it's an effective, well-paced chiller that charts Jay's increasingly desperate attempts to be rid of the shapeshifting monster before it's too late.
Director David Robert Mitchell has fun playing with a variety of horror tropes en route to a suitably high strung climactic showdown. The film arrived four years after his acclaimed coming-of-age effort The Myth of the American Sleepover. Despite the stark contrast in genre, both films touch on similar themes of teen angst and sexual identity. For Mitchell, the pair proved his worth as a filmmaker operating on a shoestring budget.
