Wes Craven's 1996 slasher bonanza Scream is universally regarded as having revitalized the flagging slasher genre. Providing a much-needed injection of innovation, originality and a willingness to laugh at some of horror's more outrageous tropes, Scream holds beloved status amongst horror buffs to this day.

The late great Craven's picture is also loaded with twists and turns from start to finish. Indeed, the man who brought audiences Freddy Krueger couldn't even wait until the first scene was over to double-cross his audience for the first time.

Many had assumed that Drew Barrymore, the most widely known and recognizable face amongst the relatively obscure young cast, would take the lead in this bold new picture. However, these fans were ultimately left open-mouthed as Barrymore's Casey Becker was sadistically murdered by Ghostface in one of horror's most iconic opening sequences.

Craven's superlative ability to perform a narrative U-turn remains on full, unashamed display as the film continues. Tatum Riley appeared to be a shoe-in to make it to the climactic showdown, only for Craven to whip the rug out from under his audience once again by gruesomely doing away with Rose McGowan's wildly popular non-final girl.

The legendary director finally caps off his white-knuckle offering in unforgettable style with Scream's immortal final reveal - the murderous Ghostface is actually two separate people, psychotic friends Billy Loomis and Stu Macher.

"I wanna play a game" indeed. This is Craven at his masterful best.
