Horror fans who love a good curveball against the backdrop of a superb horror film could do far worse than Saw's sadistic maiden voyage. Hell, there's even something for those amongst us who love a literal twist in their fright flicks further down the line - avid fans will remember Saw III's bone mangling rack with a wince.

Returning to the events of the first film, it could be argued that being chained to a pipe in a terrifying decrepit room is an abhorrent bolt from the blue in itself. However, factoring in the introduction of a sadistic masked serial killer and the realization that sawing your own foot off is the only method of escape is an appallingly unexpected series of unfortunate events.

The depraved tale produces one bombshell after another as it unfolds, culminating in an unforgettably macabre climactic sequence. Protagonist Adam finds a tape that reveals purported antagonist Zep as a hapless patsy for Jigsaw, coerced into taking fellow captive Lawrence Gordon's family hostage by the Machiavellian John Kramer.

Kramer appears soon enough in shocking fashion - he has been in the room with the pair all along, disguised as a corpse. Tobin Bell's killer delivers the coup de grĂ¢ce to the viewer's souls by emotionlessly informing the desolate Adam that he accidentally disposed of his means of escape at the the game's onset - draining the bath he initially found himself in flushed his handcuff keys down the plug.
