10 Great Horror Movies You Can't Stream Anywhere

4. The Uninvited (1944)

Paramount Pictures, Inc.

The 1940s saw a wave of supernatural-themed horror films hit cinema screens for the first time. In terms of sheer quality, chief amongst these offerings was 1944's The Uninvited.

Years ahead of its time, Lewis Allen's picture follows a pair of siblings who purchase a property in Cornwall that soon becomes plagued by paranormal activity. The movie didn't just receive rave reviews from critics for the quality of filmmaking on display, but The Uninvited was acclaimed as one of the first films to legitimately terrify whoever found themselves watching.

In addition to receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography - an utterly unthinkable notion for a horror movie as of 2023 - The Uninvited was a commercial smash hit with mainstream audiences. Allen's horror even managed to out-gross contemporary Universal Studios powerhouses in the vein of House of Frankenstein with ease, adding to the glowing reputation associated with this black-and-white masterpiece.

The fact that such a seminal piece of horror cinema can't even be found on one of horror's dedicated streaming services today is about as egregious as it gets.
