5. Apartment Zero (1988)

Apartment Zero may identify as more of a psychological thriller than a full-blown horror film, but it just about has enough horror to warrant an entry on this list.

With that being said, the notoriety of the movie's homoerotic overtones, its suffusion of black comedy, and an outrageously over-the-top performance from a young Colin Firth land Martin Donovan's 1988 outing a spot here.

Set during a socially tumultuous period in 1980s Buenos Aires, Apartment Zero follows a friendship between two expatriates that turns sour when one begins to suspect the other of committing a series of politically motivated murders. Despite praise for the aforementioned Firth and Hart Bochner in the leading roles, the film was panned by the majority of reviewers upon release.

In spite of this, Apartment Zero received a glowing reassessment by modern critics, adding to the cult classic status that the movie had already attained as the years went by. When one considers Firth's profile as one of the more recognisable and celebrated faces throughout Hollywood to this day, it's almost unbelievable that one of his earliest hits still can't be found on any streaming services.
