8. Pink Flamingos
The brainchild of John Waters, Pink Flamingos is notorious for its extremely offensive humour and extremely graphic scenes. It’s a film defined by its shock, remembered for the truly stomach churning scenes. It not only kickstarted Waters career, but also his long time friend/actor Divine who gives a career defining performance as “The World’s Filthiest Person”, which saw him having to indulge in a number of obscene scenes including the infamous faeces eating scene during the films climax.
The film follows self professed “filthiest person alive”, Babs Johnson (Divine) as she attempts to prove the depths she will go for a little fame when provoked by a married couple. It includes what is easily some of the most offensive scenes put to screen; remaining a must-see due to the depths the cast went to for the filmmaker.
Though the mass public quickly shunned it, it began finding fame and notoriety in the directors hometown of Baltimore where it was shown in a number of midnight screenings. It soon became infamous with moviegoers who clamoured to see the film dubbed the most disturbing of all time. Screenings even notoriously contained vomit bags, an addition that Waters was said to be proud of. It sold out a number of theatres in the city and soon gained a large cult following throughout the rest of the decade across the country.
Decades later, the film still manages to shock younger audiences who may be more used to the violence of the film. It still manages to attract audiences to late night screenings and boasts a large cult following. It’s now seen by many as being one of the most daring films of all time and a must-see for any true fan of the cult movie status.
