10 Great Midnight Movies You Need To Watch

5. The Warriors

Rocky Horror
Paramount Pictures

Walter Hill’s The Warriors was released amid controversy in 1979. During its initial release, it attracted the wrong kind of attention thanks to the violence that broke out in screenings across America. This led to the film being withdrawn from a number of theatres; whilst advertising was limited to evenings.

When the film was brought back two weeks after the fighting had calmed, it was pushed to late night screenings. The violence didn’t deter moviegoers, and it soon became a minor hit for the director who went on to forge an impressive career.

Packed full of memorable quotes (“Can you Dig It”?) and its countercultural cultural attitude helped establish it as one of the best films of the decade. Almost 40 years later, the film is considered a cult classic among fans and critics alike. Fans still attend showings, and regularly dress up as their favourite characters.
