10 Great Modern Directors Who Are Consistently Overlooked

8. Steven Soderbergh

stevensoderbergh600 Despite directing some very popular movies around the turn of the century such as Out of Sight, Erin Bronkovich and Ocean's Eleven, Steven Soderbergh is ridiculously overlooked given the fact that he's probably the most diverse director in Hollywood right now. He's one of the few American filmmakers to win top honors at the Cannes Film Festival (arguably the most prestigious in the world) and has directed movies as varying as a biopic of the controversial guerilla leader Che Guevara, to a starring vehicle for mixed martial arts star Gina Carano. Alongside Quentin Tarantino, he was largely responsible for the Indie explosion in the 90's and has churned out a new movie almost every year without a significant decrease in quality, leading to his large filmography. His upcoming thriller Side Effects is said to be his last film and marks the end of one of the most creative careers in Hollywood. Filmography:Sex, Lies and Videotape (1989), Kafka (1991), King of the Hill (1993) , The Underneath (1995), Schizopolis (1996), Out of Sight (1998), The Limey (1999), Erin Bronkovich (2000), Traffic (2000), Ocean's Eleven (2001), Full Frontal (2002), Solaris (2002), Ocean's Twelve (2004), Bubble (2005), The Good German (20006), Ocean's Thirteen (2007) , Che (2008), The Girlfriend Experience (2009), The Informant (2009), Contagion (2011), Haywire (2012), Magic Mike (2012), Side Effects (2013)

I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
