7. Alfonso Cuaron
Despite directing what is regarded by most critics as the best Harry Potter film, Cuaron remains a relatively obscure director.His 2006 film Children of Men is one of the most acclaimed works of the 2000's and yet, Cuaron has never been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director. Cuaron is known for his long takes with no editing, almost as if he were filming a documentary, with some of his shots in Harry Potter lasting several minutes at a time while Children of Men feature an eight minutes unbroken camera take. This serves to ground his movies in realism and is one of his trademarks. His films often deal with journey taken by his characters, either literally or metaphorically. Cuaron might gain some more recognition later this year with his Sci-fi film Gravity which has played at a few screenings to overwhelming acclaim. This might finally be the year where the general public is alerted to his filmmaking prowess.
