10 Great Moments In Otherwise Terrible Movies
4. Die Another Day - Opening Sequence
The Terrible Movie: Die Another Day was the James Bond film so bad that the entire franchise had to be rebooted.
The Brosnan movies are notorious for their increased use of over the top set-pieces and Die Another Day marked the point that it finally bubbled over into insanity. Gimmicks like the invisible car and the ridiculously convoluted plan of the villain using a space laser just to clear a minefield burned up the little credibility that the series had left. And that's not even getting to the terrible CGI scene where Bond surfs on a tsunami.
The Great Moment: Die Another Day's opening doesn't just seem like a better film than the rest, it feels like the start of a completely different movie.
After infiltrating North Korea to stop a warlord, James Bond is captured by soldiers and, over the course of the credits, we see him brutally tortured with scorpions and freezing cold water. This goes on for over a year before MI6 is able to arrange a prisoner exchange for a nearly broken Bond.
To make matters worse, he's then suspended from the Secret Service under suspicion of leaking information and has to strike out on his own to clear his name.
It's kind of gritty back to basics set-up that made Casino Royale so great and it's a shame it doesn't last long after that scene.
