10 Great Moments In Otherwise Terrible Movies
2. Spider-Man 3 - Sandman's Origin
The Terrible Movie: Spider-Man 3 is a perfect example of how greedy executives can bring down a movie.
At the behest of executives who wanted to sell more toys, Sam Raimi was forced to write Venom into the plot. With Sandman and a new Green Goblin already part of the story, the addition of a third villain created way too many plots to juggle and the film ended up a jumbled mess that killed the franchise.
The Great Moment: Surprisingly, the villain who came out of Spider-Man 3 the best was Sandman. While he had always been just a third-rate thug in the comics, the movie gave him some real pathos by revealing that he was just trying to find a way to pay for his daughter's life-saving surgery.
Flint Marko's transformation is a beautiful and poignant scene. After partially pulling himself together from the surrounding sand, Sandman looks at what he has become and falls into despair. However, he then sees his locket with a picture of his daughter in it. Determined to save her, he completely reconstitutes himself and walks out of the sand pit.
The scene's lack of dialogue and haunting backing music help to make it one of the most understated but effecting scenes in the entire trilogy.
