7. Tony Stark & The Avengers (The Avengers)
Robert Downey Jr. had already won our hearts and our envy playing Iron Man, so when news hit that there would be a movie that would combine most of our favourite Marvel characters such as Thor and the Hulk... well, it sounded perhaps a little too good to be true. In the past, whether it be in movies or music, it somehow seems that, like the England football team, putting six characters who are sparkling and wooing on their own, together, may end up with a film that just doesn't meet up to expectations. Somehow the sum of its parts is nowhere near the value of each part individually. However, this completely contradicted that rule. It seems that the perfect balance was struck between the characters and the roles they played in the story. There was no attempt to dial down the characters' personalities and part of the thrill of the movie, I personally feel, was the genius way in which the heroes were played off against one another. The theme running throughout of them finding each other unpleasant, or somewhat of a nuisance to work with, seemed to fuel not only the humour but also simply the dynamic of the film. Of course, technically we can't call the whole of the Avengers team one single character so I had to single one out. No offence to the others but I feel the choice is obvious. Iron Man is one of the highest grossing comic movies ever being the eleventh biggest opening weekend in America. With Downey Jr. also wooing us as Sherlock Holmes for the second time the year before in 2011, it seems this actor has, almost certainly, made every man in world jealous of the cool that oozes from him in these movies. Going back to Iron Man though in Avengers it seems that his quick quips and his genius status in the world of science makes more a truly hysterical character who, yet again, has left the audience laughing and in awe.
