5. Suzy Bishop (Moonrise Kingdom)
Now for a less mainstream choice that perhaps may not seem like the obvious candidate for such a definitive award. For most, perhaps, Suzy didn't define 2012. However, for the cult Anderson fanatic following that she will definitely have, it seems that she will have been the only character, amongst others from Moonrise Kingdom, that has stuck in their minds. Suzy is who every teenage girl feels she is. Every teenage girl, whether the same age as Suzy or older (I have friends who are twenty and still find her incredibly inspirational) can relate to Suzy Bishop. May it stem from the simple reason that she dresses impeccably, to the heroism she performs on behalf of her true love Sam, to the adventures she has that truly display the spirit of being young and in love, she's great. Suzy, of course, was the star of the Wes Anderson hit Moonrise Kingdom. This was his first movie in three years following his quirky and critically acclaimed adaptation of Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr. Fox. Like all of his movies, this one was wrought with sprightly scenarios and eccentricities that both thrill and enchant his followers. The love affair between Suzy and Sam is one that it seems everybody young can relate to. Also, the fact that she is decidedly unstable and considered beyond help by her parents there's a sense of reality and awkwardness about her that, to me, seems similar to past loved characters such as Holden Caulfield and Charlie from the smash hit Perks of Being a Wallflower. She is an outsider until she meets Sam and their adventures and its elements like these that make this not only as much of an action adventure as we could attribute to Anderson but also a heartwarming coming-of-age tale. Girls want to be her and young boys want to find somebody like her. I think Suzy Bishop was the underdog heroine of 2012.
