10 Great Movie Characters Who Never Really Existed

9. Ivan - The Machinist

ivanThe_Machinist Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale) is a sick man. He claims he hasn't slept in a year, and finds it impossible to. He often nods off throughout the day, not really paying attention to the world around him. Trevor is a machinist in a factory where his focus and concentration is needed. A co-worker named Miller loses his hand after Trevor doses off and hits the start button, causing the machine to latch onto Miller's sleeve. Trevor blames the dismemberment on another worker who he claims was distracting him. The worker in question? Ivan. He claimed he works down in the pits, and took a laid position after Reynolds is taken into questioning by the FBI. The large man speaks in a gruff southern accent, and has a clearly immature psyche. He's usually behind a pair of sunglasses, or the wheel of his beautiful Pontiac Firebird. Trevor hunts Ivan after he goes missing, although unsuccessful. He runs the plates on his car to reveal it's a car Trevor claimed destroyed after he trashed it a year ago. Trevor's confused and malnourished mind conjured the ribald apparition Ivan on a subconscious level. Ivan harasses Trevor into facing his demons and how he became the barely liminal being he now is. Ivan is an essential part of The Machinist (2004) who sets the crooked wheels turning in motion for a harrowing story of dementia and suspense. John Sharian plays the big bad man perfectly, though the film itself was lacking.
