6. Dr. Ian Malcolm - The Lost World: Jurassic Park
Dr. Ian Malcolm was, without a doubt, the best thing about
Jurassic Park, and I'm including the dinosaurs in that. He was the kind of character who you secretly wanted to be the lead, a nerdy scientist who thought he was - in the words of park owner John Hammond - a "rock star." How bloody interesting. Sadly, Steven Spielberg failed to see how great a character he had on his hands, and reduced Malcolm to "an injured guy" halfway through the flick. What a waste. Imagine how exciting it was to hear, then, that Dr. Malcolm was set to return as the lead freakin' character in the long-awaited sequel,
The Lost World. What a stroke of genius! Well, at least it was on paper. When Jeff Goldblum returned to Dr. Malcolm's shoes for the follow-up, the cool, charismatic character from the first movie had been replaced by a moany, neurotic old dad who spent most of the movie being boring - a watered-down protagonist if ever there were one. And why does he look so different? Where's the wacky hair? The trademark glasses? Why?!
