10 Great Movie Franchises That Lost It By The End

1. Batman (Burton/Schumacher Era)

Terminator 2
Warner Bros. Pictures

From 1989 to 1997, Batman was the main superhero game at the box office. The film that started it off was Michael Keaton in Tim Burton's Batman 1989, a film that fans are still obsessed with. The movie that shut the franchise down was Schumacher's 1997 release, Batman & Robin, a movie widely regarded as one of the worst superhero films ever made.

George Clooney took over the starring role for the third Batman in four films and it's important to note that the failure of this film isn't his fault at all. It was a poorly conceived movie from moment one, with a bad premise, a worse script and some terrible casting decisions. It went campy in a way that totally misunderstood camp and lacked any substantial connection to what makes Batman great.

As Warner Bros sought to reinvent Burton's brilliant vision to make toy companies and McDonalds happy, they threw the baby out with the bath water and handed their blue chip brand to somebody who didn't understand it at all.
