10 Great Movie Ideas Let Down By Their Budget
6. Life
Admittedly, 2017's Life isn't an awful film, it just didn't exactly do anything of note for the sci-fi genre.
The reason? Well, the budget of $62 million for a rated R film is quite high for a start and with that comes a certain level of expectation to boot.
So, instead of ensuring his film had a creative and innovative narrative that could really entrance an audience, Daniel Espinosa chose to focus on creating a reality aboard his fantasy space shuttle.
Suspended by wires for the majority of their time on set, the actors would feel as though they were suspended in a zero gravity environment that would be found on a space shuttle. This would involve a hefty investment in rigging said set with the equipment to achieve the visual effect and the cost of cutting out the wires in post wouldn't have been cheap either.
Add to that the detailed visual rendering of the small devilish entity, Calvin, and you can see where the majority of this generous investment could be found.
Yes, the effect of suspending in mid-air and Calvin (the foreign body) were admirable to behold, but was all that really worth sacrificing the bones of what could have been an intimate low-budget character study of what happens when you are forced to survive or perish? Just $100 million worldwide at the box office, suggests not.
