10 Great Movie Stories Wasted On Terrible Sequels
1. Rocky Becomes A Coach - Rocky V
The recent Creed films have breathed some welcome life back into the Rocky franchise, both films proving equally as strong as any of the original sequels. The key move for the film's success was making Rocky a coach, leaving his fighting days behind and tutoring Apollo Creed's son to glory.
As fans of the franchise would know, this was not the first time that the idea of Rocky Balboa becoming a coach had occurred in the franchise. The first attempt at this story being used was in 1989's Rocky V, with Sly's famous character taking young 'gun' Tommy under his wing.
With Rocky largely stripped of his winnings thanks to dodgy financial dealings, the plot offered up explores the dilemma faced by the champion boxer and what he is willing to sacrifice for his family. The idea that he would choose to put his health and love of his family above the chance to have one last crack at defending his title is both strong and brave.
Unfortunately the final product was a bust, taking an eternity to get to the training sequences, which don't evem last that long. Rather than having Rocky guide his protege to the championship title, the poor choice is made to cast Tommy as a villain who has no respect for the former champ. The final act of the film is a cliched mess, leaving the audience disliking all the characters, with a street fight that is meant to be epic just coming across as quite lame.
