10 Great Movie Stories Wasted On Terrible Sequels
6. Arnie Takes On Arnie - Terminator Genisys
The idea to put a new spin on the Terminator franchise was deemed a necessary one after the unsuccessful Terminator Salvation. With the option of letting the legacy of a franchise rest without being tarnished by weaker sequels clearly not a viable option for money hungry Hollywood, the decision was instead made to revisit the events of the original film.
The idea of two 'Arnie' Terminators smashing into each other was an awesome idea that could have been the basis for the whole film, especially with Byung-Hun Lee's T1000 also turning up in 1984. There was clearly enough story here for a whole film, while the throw back to yesteryear when the franchise was at its peak looked to be cleverly integrated.
The story also dared to go where the previous entry, Terminator Salvation, feared to tread, transforming John Connor into a Terminator. The stakes should definitely have been raised by this revelation, making for an edge of the seat thriller with definite consequences.
Unfortunately the exciting story ideas were largely wrapped up in the first 15 minutes of the film, with an impossible to decipher time travel plot taking over the rest of the movie. The 'John Connor turns Terminator' plot is also handled clumsily, feeling tacked on rather than an integral part of the story. Arnie gives it his all, but casting the lifeless Emilia Clarke and Jai Courtenay as Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese proves a woeful decision.
