10 Great Movie Stories Wasted On Terrible Sequels
5. Marv's Mum On A Revenge Mission - Home Alone 4
Yes, you all probably have the same question- did they really make a fourth Home Alone? The answer is yes, which means yes, they made a third one too. While the third entry in the franchise effectively acted as a standalone movie with no connection to the first two films, the fourth entry actually served as a genuine third entry to the franchise.
The film also has a decent story, with Marv and his new wife stalking out the McAlister household, something which only Kevin notices. There is a ripping twist when it is revealed that Marv has someone undercover as a maid in the McAlister household- his own Mum!
The idea of the McAlisters struggling through a separation also was an intriguing new concept, the idea that Kevin was making up everything he observes due to the divorce a clever twist. Upping the stakes and 'opposition' for Kevin should have made his inevitable final victory all the sweeter.
The story could well have lead to a half decent movie - if it was made ten years earlier. Instead we are left with a second rate cast that can't come close to replicating the magic of the original McAlisters. An aspiring young actor by the name of Mike Weinberg tries in vain to emulate Macaulay Culkin's interpretation of Kevin, but fails miserably. The rest of the cast for this TV special aren't much better, French Stewart lacking any of the bumbling fun of Marv so effortlessly realised by Daniel Stern.
