10 Great Movies About Making Movies

6. Lost In La Mancha

Hey, have you ever seen that Don Quixote movie starring Johnny Depp that Terry Gilliam directed? No? Well neither has anybody else. This 2002 documentary started off as a standard behind the scenes style doc for the DVD of Gilliam's proposed film The Man Who Killed Don Quioxte, but as the production became ravaged with disaster after disaster, it quickly became a chronicle of a big budget movie unraveling at the seams. Within a week of the cameras rolling, the lead actor dropped out due to injury and the sets were destroyed by winds, flash floods and hail, quickly going $15 million over budget and shutting down production not soon after. Lost In La Mancha stands as a document of what not to do on a film set.
