10 Great Movies Almost Ruined By Their Alternate Endings

9. Titanic

The Ending You Know: You probably knew this before going into the film; ship hits iceberg, massive loss of life, Leonardo DiCaprio freezes to death in the Atlantic, Rose starts a new life. Of course, there's also that whole modern-day (well, 1996) story too. Old Rose throws the ridiculously expensive Heart of the Ocean into the sea and goes to sleep, dreaming of all those lost on the fateful liner. Whether this is showing her death or merely her happily remembering her past is left lovingly ambiguous. The Ending We Almost Got: Whenever it's mentioned there's an alternate ending to Titanic the immediate joke is "oh, so the ship doesn't hit the iceberg". And it's as original and funny every time it's made. The actual alternate ending deals with the resolution of Old Rose and explorer Brock Lovett's story. Instead of Rose succeeding in throwing the jewel into the ocean, Brock and Rose's granddaughter mistake it for suicide, leading to a heated exchange that sees Mr. Lovett chuck the diamond over the side, realising the apparent error of his ways. Why It Would Ruin The Film: Some people argue Titanic is already pretty heavy handed and this scene could have easily pushed it over the edge. Brock has already expressed his moral of the Titanic ("I've thought of nothing except Titanic, but I never got it"), so it serves only to pad out an already lengthy run-time.
