10 Great Movies Almost Ruined By Their Alternate Endings
6. Thelma And Louise
The Ending You Know: Thelma And Louise's finale was so immediately iconic it took The Simpsons only two years to provide a their own episode parodying it. The punchy impact of the release of Ridley Scott's female empowerment tale may be long over, but it still strikes an affecting image. After a weekend vacation turns into a crime spree, the two friends end up cornered by the police. Realising there is no escape for them, the duo drive off into the Grand Canyon, fading to white as they begin to fall. And there's no garbage pile to save them. The Ending We Almost Got: Instead of just ending with the jump, the alternate ending continues, showing the car crash into the canyon below while the army of amassed cops disperse. Why It Would Ruin The Film: It's a bit like Butch Cassidy's ending in that it shows the outcome that was obviously implied, but in this case it's worse, shifting the ultimate message of the film. Instead of being a final moment of uplifting freedom, dare we say to victory, for the heroines we get a more sombre and on the nose sadness that pushes subtext forward.
