10 Great Movies Almost Ruined By Their Alternate Endings
5. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
The Ending You Know: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Edgar Wright's first film not part of his Three Flavours Trilogy, was a cult movie before it was even released. Based on the slacker comic, it's the sort of movie its fans would want to be a box office disappointment just to add to its mystique. And, as expected, the film didn't come close to making back its budget, although it has gained a substantial following on DVD. Like the graphic novel, Wright's film ends with Scott getting the girl he's been literally fighting for for the whole movie, with clingy ex Knives finally accepting their relationship wouldn't have worked. The Ending We Almost Got: The film could have diverged immediately at this final scene. After Scott's beaten all of Ramona's evil exes, she walks off to live her life, leaving Scott to go out with the once-psychotic Knives who, all of a sudden, he's showing interest in. Why It Would Ruin The Film: There's some nice ideas behind the alternate ending - realising what you want is right in front of you and the difficulties of relationships - but it just destroys the whole point of the film thus far. Undercutting Scott's journey, it would have been a needless divergence from the source.
