A favourite of your parents during their stoned and reckless youths almost fifty years past, Kubrick's masterpiece still has more than enough energy to sustain a heated discussion of both its broader themes as well as the more obtuse gears of its various plot engines. Long sequences of spaceships docking and monkeys learning how to hit things with bones have gained it a kind of infamy among people who have little patience for the slow burn. But if you're in the mood for something that drifts before it soars, then 2001 is essentially the perfect film. Little else since - even in Kubrick's own filmography - has captured a wonder so complete that it deserves to be marvelled at with due time and reverence. This one is strictly for leaving earthly concerns behind. Which films do you think have an surreal, otherworldly quality to them? Let us know in the comments!
