10 Great Movies It’s Cool To Hate
5. Avatar
When James Cameron’s Avatar was released in late
2009 it not only broke a tonne of records, becoming the first movie to pass the
$2 billion mark at the box office and the world’s highest grossing film (a
title it still holds today) but had everybody from Roger Ebert to Steven
Spielberg hailing it as the best sci-fi since Star Wars.
But like Titanic before it, it was only a matter of time before Avatar started getting people’s backs up. Despite its ground-breaking and awe-inspiring visuals, sceptics started pointing out its similarities with other films – it’s Dances with Wolves in space! – and took issue with its supposedly anti-militarism and anti-American message. Or you know, it could’ve just been the fact it was both massively popular and massively profitable pissing off the film hipsters.
Unluckily for them, four Avatar sequels are currently underway. Expect the next wave of Avatar haters to rear their ugly heads when Avatar 2 hits screens in 2020.
