3. Dragged Across Concrete - Jennifer Carpenter (Debra Morgan)
S. Craig Zahler's Dragged Across Concrete follows two police officers, Brett (Mel Gibson) and Anthony (Vince Vaughn). After losing their badges, as well as their reputations, the former cops decide to make money in the criminal underworld.
Because the trailer emphasises Jennifer Carpenter's role in the story, viewers naturally assumed her character, Kate, served as the leading lady. Disappointedly, Carpenter doesn't figure in the plot that much and is killed off before the movie is half over. But with what little she has, Carpenter proves her worth, giving a real, grounded performance, showcasing she has the skills to play a more substantial role in a movie.
Of course, the fact she kicks the bucket before the movie really gets going is no reason to avoid this hard-knuckle crime drama. The run-time may surpass the two-and-a-half hour mark but Dragged Across Concrete's visceral action, gritty tone, and punchy dialogue makes it anything but boring.
The trailer may have misled the public on the size of Carpenter's role but her solid performance is one of many reasons to give Dragged Across Concrete a look.
