10 Great Movies Starring The Stranger Things Cast
2. Full Metal Jacket
One of Stanley Kubrick's many masterpieces and the final completed film directed by the man before his passing in 1999, Full Metal Jacket shows the Marines of the Vietnam War from training to full-scale conflict.
While many people will fondly remember the breakout of performance of real-life drill instructor R. Lee Ermey, it's Matthew Modine's Private "Joker" at the centre of the film. Throughout training he's placed in command of his division, watches the mental collapse and suicide of his comrade Private "Gomer Pyle", then at the war itself, he struggles to emotionally detach himself from the horrors around him even when knowingly fighting children.
It's interesting to see Modine go from a soldier trying to do his job but also retain his humanity in this film, and yet become such a cold-hearted monster, happy to experiment on children in Stranger Things. This is how versatile an actor Modine is, and how under-used a lot of amazing actors are.
Thank goodness for steaming services like Netflix to introduce younger fans to some truly excellent actors.
