10 Great Movies That Break The Fourth Wall
8. Fight Club (1999)
Fight Club's concept and final twist are about as famous as it's possible to get. The Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) reveal, the rules of the club, Project Mayhem - everything about Fight Club is ingrained in the modern movie-goers mind. And yet it remains one of the most re-watchable films of the '90s, a darkly funny, bleak social satire anchored by The Narrator (Edward Norton) and his frequent interjections to the plot.
The Narrator, unreliable as he is, pops up every now and then to explain key aspects of the film, from characters, to events in his life, to the final twist.
The best break comes when he tells the audience about Tyler Durden's job as a projectionist, a scene which perfectly demonstrates how clever and fun a film it is at its core. As The Narrator explains what Tyler gets up to in his work, Tyler himself butts in to add extra details, like a double fourth wall break.
Much like Deadpool, Fight Club is a brilliant movie through and through, but would probably not have been as successful had the fourth wall been unbroken.
