10 Great Movies That Break The Fourth Wall
3. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Few movies so perfectly embody the 1980s as well as John Hughes' teen comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Skipping out of school by faking an illness, Ferris (Matthew Broderick) spends the day trying to get away from his scheming dean whilst hanging out with his girlfriend (Mia Sara) and his best friend (Alan Ruck).
As the trio travel around Chicago and begin an unprecedented journey of self-discovery, Ferris can often be seen breaking the fourth wall to express his deepest concerns and the reasoning behind his various (and often destructive) decisions.
Ferris Bueller is one of cinema's most quoted and re-watchable movies, with lines such as "It's over, go home" and Ferris' philosophical remarks about life moving "pretty quick" being pillars of modern day pop culture.
The fourth wall breaks throughout allow the audience to feel like they're there with the trio, skipping school and going on adventures instead of being at school, and even as adults it's hard not to fall in love with the prospect of a day of complete freedom.
