10 Great Movies That Break The Fourth Wall

4. Alfie (1966)

Ferris Bueller
Paramount Pictures

Alfie is a seriously clever film - funny, witty, honest and powerfully performed.

Alfie (Michael Caine) is a womaniser of the highest order. Cheating his way through life, proving time and time again to be a rampant misogynist (referring to women as "it" and disregarding their feelings without remorse), and just being generally unlikable, Alfie constantly breaks the fourth wall to explain his actions and justify his mistakes.

What makes Alfie so clever, though, is the sheer narcissism and sociopathic behaviour he exudes, with his weak justifications often completely contradicting what actually happens on screen.

Caine is magnificent in the role, securing his first of many Oscar nominations and managing to make Alfie at once horrible but just charming enough to be funny. He always seems as though he could be a good person, but Caine and his narration often twists expectations and leaves you guessing about the film's outcome till the very end.
